“Sponono” is a tragic short story by Alan Paton in which, over a number of years and by degrees, a young man turns criminal and continues to pit his will against the principal of a reformatory who once offered him kindness and a chance at a better life.
At end, the masterful attempts at manipulation turn desperate and the principal must make his final stand and so offers the person he once tried to help, a last word, and a last move on the chessboard of their now entangled lives.
